Community health centers can lead the way in colorectal cancer prevention
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: An opportunity for community health centers (CHCs) to engage their communities in the importance of prevention and early detection while optimizing their team’s approach to Colorectal cancer screening (COL).
Colorectal cancer is one of the few cancers that can be detected through regular screenings before it becomes cancer. Yet, it still remains the third largest cause of cancer deaths and is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. And up to 20% of diagnoses are in patients under age 55—almost twice the rate in 1995.
The National Institutes of Health studied the factors that get in the way of people adhering to a recommended screening regimen and pointed to socioeconomic indicators like lack of access to routine care and the perception of discrimination from the medical system as two major barriers. That’s just where CHCs can have the greatest impact.
CHCs are uniquely positioned to cut colorectal cancer rates by ensuring their communities get the routine care they need, including regular colorectal cancer screenings, and that patients receive this care in the inclusive way CHCs are known for.
This Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, let’s turn awareness into action. The Yuvo Health team is here to help.
